Looking For Solid Ground

More and more athletic departments around the country are figuring out that the only way to ensure that their football fields will be utilized to their fullest potential is by replacing the natural grass surface. One of the recent fields to be considered for making the switch is Beaver Stadium in Ohio.

It stands to reason that schools want to give their teams the best opportunity for playing every week no matter how treacherous the conditions might otherwise have been. By putting in artificial turf the whole question of whether the gorund will be fit for play is nullified.

the assurance with these kinds of surfaces is that the footing will still be as sure when it's wet as it is when it's dry. The factors to be taken into consideration from there on are mainly financial.

Speed of Archery Arrows

When compound bow manufacturers advertise their latest bow, it's all about the power and speed with which it will fire an arrow. What they fail to mention is that the kind of arrow you use will have a huge say in how fast it will be fired. Not only that, the type of arrow you use will have an effect on the accuracy with which it shoots.

The heavier the arrow, the more force is going to be required to shoot it and the more flaws in the arrow construction the less accurately it will fly. That being said, different arrows are made for different circumstances and you will have a need for each different type at some point or another.

The key to successful archery shooting isn't so much in the quality of the compound bow you use because they are all fitted with similar features. After all, they're precision instruments. Where you will really find your edge is in carefully choosing your arrows, both in the materials they are made from and the quality of the manufacture. Make sure the arrows you buy are straight, that they suit the bow you use and the type of shooting you will be doing. Factors such as the length of the arrow you need are governed by your draw length.

Arrows are mainly available made from 4 materials: wood, fiberglass, aluminum and an aluminum-carbon mix. They each have positives and negatives depending on what kind of archery you plan on doing. Essentially, the carbon arrows are the lightest and most expensive with strength and durability thrown in. This makes them a popular choice for many archers but may not necessarily be the arrow that suits you.

It's true, buying an appropriate compound bow is a critical step when taking up the sport of archery, but just as important are the arrows you use. You may think that you are saving money by skimping on the cost of your arrows, but you may actually be degrading the worth of your bow.

Checking Out Smartbleach Laser Teeth Whitening

Laser teeth whitening is a technology that brightens teeth quickly by the dentist. Smartbleach is a laser tooth whitening treatment performed by the dentist that promises you whiter teeth almost immediately. Smartbleach is carried out with the use of a laser light and peroxide gel.

The step by step application process sounds similar to a number of other products in use and are as follows:

  • The teeth and gums are cleaned and dried by the dentist before a protective layer is placed on the gums.
  • The special Smartbleach red gel is applied to the teeth.
  • Each tooth is then exposed to the laser light for around 30 seconds. According to the advertising the patient should either feel a slight tingling sensation or nothing at all.
  • The gel is then removed and the mouth is rinsed out.
  • This process is repeated for three applications with the entire treatment taking from 1 to 1-1/4 hours.
  • Finally the teeth are given a fluoride treatment activated by the Smartbleach laser to protect them and build up resistance against decay.

Although it sounds similar, the technology behind the Smartbleach laser teeth whitening process is subtly different. The Smartbleach laser produces a light from the green color spectrum which is then applied to a red gel. The gel is a non-acidic preparation of hydrogen peroxide. The idea is that the complementary colors of the laser and the gel interact to reach large, light absorbing molecules in the teeth which are changed into smaller molecules. A photo–chemical reaction takes place. The laser and gel penetrate through the outer enamel and into the dentin layer. The smaller molecules give more light reflective surface to the teeth. The result is whiter teeth.

Observing Artificial Grass Growth

Artificial grass was originally designed as an alternative sports field surface to replace natural grass in situations where it was difficult to maintain. In particular, indoor sporting arenas benefit greatly from the synthetic covering, but increasingly, outdoor arenas are being converted. Although it fails to meet the natural grass look, it is a stronger, more durable alternative to the real thing. The most famous early use of artificial grass is the stadium named after the brand of artificial grass that covers it, the Astrodome in Houston, Texas where it was laid in 1965. Synthetic grass has, on the other hand, more and more gained fame for private lawns these days.

The popularity of playing on artificial grass has grown both with the players and the spectators due mainly to the grass-like way in which synthetic grass responds coupled with the more certain footing it provides. Further progress both in the manufacture and the aesthetic qualities have continued to be made leading to it being used in other outdoor areas replacing higher maintenance real grass.

The look of synthetic grass has now started to expand its use beyond just the sporting arenas and is increasingly being used by homeowners to replace turf and lawns. Homeowners who have despaired of being able to grow grass due to the unsuitable soil or weather conditions are now able to make use of artificial grass to attain the look of a rich verdant lawn year round.

There are other personal and environmental advantages to the use of artificial grass and there are many reputable artificial grass installers now available to lay it for you. There will obviously always be a need for the real thing but there is also a strong case to be made for the creep of artificial grass into our home backyards.

Scrap Metal Thieves Getting Inventive

It seems that almost every day in the news lately there is a story about scrap metal theft of some kind or another, almost to the point where it is reaching epidemic proportions. With recycled metal prices obviously high there must be a booming market for easy money for those desperate enough. And let’s face it, if there’s money to be made, someone’s going to lie, cheat or steal to get it.

When I first heard about scrap metal theft my mind immediately went to stolen metal bars and sheeting off of construction sites and I suspect that was the original instances of the crime. But these days thieves appear to be getting more inventive with it. Some of the things that are getting stolen would never have been thought of only a few years ago.

We’re talking about things like the brass nuts from fire hydrants which has escalated to whole fire hydrants, plaques and urns from cemeteries, empty beer kegs from alleys behind bars and breweries, manhole covers and sewer grates. In the UK there are reports of football change-rooms that have been stripped of shower fittings, taps, sinks and copper piping.

To combat the global scrap metal black-market, attempts are being made to bring in new laws to govern scrap metal yards. Some of them are being met with approval, most are not, particularly by the legitimate scrap metal merchants who find the new laws restrictive to say the least.

Unfortunately, with the high price commanded for recycled metal and the lure of easy money, it seems that the situation could be a difficult one to control.

Is Your Tissue Getting Enough Oxygen?

Uh oh, here's a worry. An L.A. Times article has warned those of us who are not getting enough sex that if you don't use it, you could lose it. As if there isn't enough pressure already!

A study in Finland covering 1000 men aged between 50 to 75 asking about the quality of their erections and the frequency they had intercourse. Five years later they came back and asked them about their general health - including any problems they may be having in the downstairs department.

The results supported the use-it-or-lose-it theory. Engaging in sex once a week halved men's chances of developing erectile dysfunction. The researchers ensured that other contributing health issues did not explain the differences in the results.

The story goes on to stress the importance of getting blood flow into the corpora cavernosa. Tissue, it says, penile tissue included, likes getting oxygen into it and the more often blood reaches tissue, the more oxygenated and healthy it becomes. The question, then arises, does oxygen-deprivation have something to do with the loss of erectile function.

Fascinating stuff, and there's so much more to the LA Times story. I suggest you go ahead and read it and remember...practice, practice, practice.

Peanut Allergy

It might be my imagination or a complete obliviousness on my part when I was young - which wouldn't be surprising - but there seems to be a lot more instances of peanut allergies in kids these days. Now, perhaps it's more that there is more known about diagnosing peanut allergies than before but we just seem to be coming across at least 1 could per year at school.

When I looked up a few statistics about peanut allergy, the source I read from the Westmead Children's Hospital said that around 3% of children have a positive reaction to the peanut allergy test. The report goes on to say that Australia has a relatively high prevalence of peanut allergy.

The 3% means that 3 kids in every 100 will have a reaction if they come in contact with peanuts. I guess this sounds about right at our small school.

The allergic reaction to peanuts is actually a due to lgE allergy antibodies against peanut proteins.

The most common symptoms to someone suffering an allergic reaction to eating peanuts range from a mild case which presents as hives around the mouth where the peanut has touched the skin. Abdominal pain or vomiting is another common reaction.

The more serious reactions include coughing, wheezing, difficulty in breathing and hoarseness of voice due to a reaction in the airway. Collapse and loss of consciousness can occur in serious cases. On the rare occasion, death has occurred from the severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.

A Night At the Footy

I had a good night at the football tonight - the Swans v Geelong match at Homebush and the match went pretty much according to script with Geelong doing as they pleased to take the game pretty comfortably. But it wasn't the footy that made this such an enjoyable night. It was sharing the experience with my children who all had a wonderful time.

Not all of my kids enjoy going to the footy as a rule but tonight we had a unanimous verdict that it was "the best" night at the football yet. It doesn't happen often that everything clicks into place, but obviously we were all prepared to be tolerant and ready to have a good time.

One of the keys to my son enjoying the game was buying a copy of the Footy Record and letting him fill in who kicked the goals and behinds. It definitely worked as a way of getting him involved in the game. Boredom failed to set in and the game flew by for him. Brilliant.
